A Rapidly Adaptive Collision Backoff Algorithm for Improving the Throughput in WLANs

چکیده
In the 802.11 protocol, fundamental medium access mechanism is called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). DCF, before making any transmission attempt, nodes count down a timer with value randomly selected from Contention Window (CW) size. If transmitted packet involved in collision, node increases CW size an attempt to reduce collision rate. Conversely, if successfully, reduces order increase frequency of attempts. The growth or reduction has critical effect on network performance. Several backoff algorithms have been proposed improve system throughput. However, none these methods enable approach theoretical maximum throughput possible under DCF. Accordingly, this study proposes Rapidly Adaptive Collision Backoff (RACB) algorithm, which adjusted dynamically based rate, as analyzed by mathematical model. Notably, RACB requires no knowledge number wireless and applicable both lightly loaded heavily networks. numerical results show that, adjusting such that rate maintained at close 0.1, enables DCF environments containing nodes.

Improving Throughput and Fairness in WLANs through Dynamically Optimizing Backoff
Given the limited channel capacity in wireless LANs, it is important to achieve high throughput and good fairness through medium access control (MAC) schemes. Although many schemes have been proposed to enhance throughput or fairness of the original IEEE 802.11 standard, they either fail to consider both throughput and fairness, or to do so with complicated algorithms. In this paper, we propose...
متن کاملCollision-Aware Backoff Mechanisms for IEEE 802, 11 WLANs
The distributed coordination function (DCF) is the most widely deployed medium access control (MAC) protocol for IEEE 802.11 WLANs. It is a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme which employs a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm to reduce the collision probability. In this paper we propose a novel backoff algorithm, collision-aware backoff mechanism (CA...
متن کاملA Backoff Algorithm for Improving Saturation Throughput in IEEE 802.11 DCF
The medium access control (MAC) protocol is the main element which determines the system throughput in wireless local area networks. The MAC technique of the IEEE 802.11 protocol is called Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). However, in the DCF access procedure, the system throughput decreases when the number of stations is large. This paper proposes a simple backoff algorithm that uses fi...
متن کاملA Reactive Cross Collision Exclusionary Backoff Algorithm in IEEE
An inseparable challenge associated with every random access network is the design of an efficient Collision Resolution Algorithm (CRA), since collisions cannot be completely avoided in such network. To maximize the collision resolution efficiency of a popular CRA, namely Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB), we propose a reactive backoff algorithm. The proposed backoff algorithm is reactive in the...
متن کاملAdaptive Backoff Algorithm for Wireless Internet
The standard IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol uses the Binary Exponential Backoff algorithm. The Binary Exponential Backoff makes exponential increments to contention window sizes. This work has studied the effect of choosing a combination between linear, exponential and logarithmic increments to contention windows. Results have shown that choosing the right increment based on network status enhances t...
